Faculty Outline
Science provides a distinctive view and way of thinking about the world. The study of Science develops students' knowledge, understanding and skills in making sense of and explaining the biological, physical and technological world, enabling them to make informed choices and responsible decisions as individuals and as part of the community.

Victor Chang Award
The Victor Chang Award is a prestigious award handed to the senior students who excel at Science. The award is handed out by the Mayor of Blacktown, and the students chosen are invited to the private tour of the Victor Chang Research facility.
Congratulations to Aalok Varma, Andy Wu and Delnesh Sundarampillai on receiving this well deserved award.
Excursions
Sydney Maritime Museum
Year 8 enjoyed an exciting trip to the National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, as part of a research project between the museum, CSIRO and IntoScience. It was a spectacular day spent on the boats on the harbour, with fascinating discussions around the scientific and historical features of the Endeavour replica and HMAS Vampire destroyer.
The National Maritime Museum tour guide instructing students on the journey they are about to begin.
Snake Tails Incursion
80 students from Year 7 and 8 participated in an interactive learning experience by Bob from Snake Tails. These students learnt about the classification system biologists use to classify organisms, and they also learnt about the role our Australian reptiles have in the environment today. We were able to pat and hold various types of lizards, a turtle and a python. We also learnt how to deal with snakes and other reptiles if we ever saw them outside. Snakes and reptiles are beautiful animals that deserve our respect, and we thank Bob from Snake Tails for giving us his time and knowledge.
IMAX
Year 9 enjoyed a trip to the IMAX cinema, Darling Harbour, where they enjoyed a 3D documentary on the research currently in astronomy.
Biology Research Field Trip
As part of the Preliminary Biology course, Year 11 conducted a research field trip at Penrith Lakes.
We completed field work exercises to improve our skills at measuring the abundance and distribution of various species in an ecosystem through the use of quadrats and transects. Upon arriving at Penrith lakes, we were welcomed by two experienced instructors who guided us throughout the events of the day. Our fieldwork was based around working at two main sites (big pond and small pond) where we worked with various scientific instruments and concepts to gather information for our subsequent assessment task that followed.
After a fun day of investigating abiotic and biotic factors of the ecosystem we ended the day with a summary session where we discussed the information gathered and related them to biological concepts. Overall the experience was highly beneficial but also incredible one.
Full STEAM Ahead at the Powerhouse Museum
Year 8 participated in a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths) course at the Powerhouse Museum, where they learnt about Computer Science and the posibilities of the future. They participated in interactive workshops involving learnign how to code, understanding game designs, creating applications of the use of other technologies.
Geography and Science Integrated Curriculum Excursion to the Blue Mountains
Year 7 were taken to the Blue Mountains, where they bushwalked through the majestic Wentworth Falls scenery. They participated in tradition Indigenous dances and customs, lead by an Indigenous leader. The students learnt about the native bushtucker and the natural processes mountains undergo to take their shape.
Brain Centre at Men's Health Day
To celebrate Men's Heath Day from a Science perspective, the students participated in a brain dissection and learned the functions and structure that is the brain. They learned about the biochemical process that take place everyday, and how the brain reacts to positive and negative stresses. They learned the importance of a healthy brain, and what they can do to ensure they keep a positive mentality.
