Mathematics

Mathematics

Mathematics is the search for patterns and relationships. It is a powerful, precise and concise means of communication used to represent, to interpret, to explain and to predict. Mathematics is a creative activity, involving invention, intuition and discovery.

The study of Mathematics at Blacktown Boys High School provides an academic and supportive environment which allow our students to thrive and achieve their personal best. Students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts which enables them to become self-motivated learners who can solve a range of problems.

Junior Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. The syllabus consists of the following strands:

·       numbers and algebra

·       measurement and geometry

·       statistics and probability

All students in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) follow the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

In Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), the curriculum is delivered at three different levels; Stage 5.3, 5.2 and Stage 5.1.

Students are placed into the classes partly based on their Stage 4 results and work ethic in the classroom. It is important for students to be studying the correct level as there are minimum recommendations for the senior courses:

·       Students who complete Stage 5.2/5.1 should select Mathematics Standard Courses.

·       Students who complete 5.3 have the option of either Mathematics Standard or Mathematics Advanced. If they are excelling in Years 9 and 10 they should select Mathematics Advanced and consider further study in the Extension courses.

Senior Mathematics

In Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) students have a choice of subjects they can study which vary in difficulty.

  • Mathematics Standard 1 (2 unit - optional HSC examination)

  • Mathematics Standard 2 (2 unit)

  • Mathematics Advanced (2 unit)

  • Mathematics Extension 1 (1 unit)

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (1 unit - Year 12 only, by invitation)

Extra Curricular

Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

Students in all years are encouraged to enter the Australian Mathematics Competition. This competition is excellent preparation for formal examinations and promote critical thinking and the study of Mathematics as a rewarding challenge.

APSMO Mathematics Olympiads

Students in Year 7 and 8 selective classes also participate in the APSMO Mathematics Olympiads. The Olympiads consist of five separate contests held between March and September. The overall aim is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills in an enjoyable environment.

Mathematics Peer Tutoring

The Mathematics Peer Tutoring program is directed by our Year 11 and 12 Mathematic student-leaders to improve the skills of our students. It runs every Tuesday and Thursday during recess and lunch where our student-leaders tutor our junior students who feel they need to further strengthen and develop their understanding.
